The iron and manganese filter with USTM Big Blue 20" technology treats water on the main supply to the house, protecting the whole plumbing system, your appliances and sanitary ware against deposits and corrosion. Its robust design and 1" connection keep pressure loss to a minimum even at high water consumption.
The iron and manganese filter is ideal for removing
- Dissolved iron and manganese from drinking and utility water.
- Hydrogen sulphide and the typical metallic smell.
- Rusty and black stains in basins, bathtubs and toilets.
- Turbidity and yellowish discolouration of water.
Why you will love the Big Blue 20" filter
- The large-format 20" cartridge with high capacity means long service intervals.
- The industrial 1" connection keeps full water flow for all taps at once.
- It protects washing machines, dishwashers and boilers against scaling and premature wear.
- It works without electricity or salt regeneration, and you replace the cartridge in minutes with the supplied wrench.

Protect your home from iron and manganese in water
Are rust stains on bathroom fittings, a metallic taste in your water or clogged household appliances a problem? The Big Blue 20" iron and manganese removal filter uses filtration technology that effectively removes dissolved iron and manganese. Unlike small under-sink filters, it is designed for central treatment of all the water in a house, even at high flow rates and heavy contamination. It suits both well water and mains water with elevated iron content.
The Big Blue 20" filter reliably removes
- Dissolved iron and manganese, which cause rusty and black stains.
- Hydrogen sulphide and the typical metallic or "rotten egg" smell.
- Turbidity and yellowish discolouration of water and laundry.
What the iron filter does not remove: water hardness (calcium and magnesium), nitrates, or bacteria and viruses. For limescale, use a water softener; for nitrates, the nitrate removal filter; and for microbiological contamination, ultrafiltration.
Key benefits for your home
- No more unsightly deposits: prevents rusty and black stains in the bathroom and kitchen.
- Protection for expensive appliances: keeps metal sediment away from the heating elements of washing machines, dishwashers and water heaters.
- Better taste and appearance: restores the water's natural clarity and removes the metallic smell.
- Performance for the whole house: the 1" connection keeps sufficient water pressure at all taps at the same time.
How does Big Blue iron removal technology work?
The system is based on a robust filter housing with a special USTM IR20BB iron and manganese removal cartridge. The filter works by oxidation and mechanical filtration: dissolved metals are converted into solid particles in the cartridge and safely trapped. The whole process is fully autonomous and needs no electricity or salt regeneration. The robust design remains stable even during pressure surges in the water main.
Technical features and design
- Large-format cartridge: the Big Blue 20" standard means a large filtration area and minimal pressure drop.
- Extra-durable housing: made of high-quality polypropylene tested for demanding conditions.
- Industrial connection: 1" brass threads (female) for a secure connection to the main pipe.
- Long service life: built for years of operation with regular cartridge replacement.
Simple installation and maintenance
The filter is installed on the main water supply to the building, indoors or in a frost-protected plant room. If you also soften your water, place the iron filter before the softener so the iron does not damage its resin.
- Pre-filter: for best results, install a mechanical filter upstream to catch sand and silt.
- Easy cartridge replacement: unscrew the blue housing with the supplied wrench and replace the cartridge in minutes.
- High capacity: the 20" size holds a large amount of impurities without frequent maintenance.
- Immediate result: right after installation and a short flush, water free of metallic turbidity flows through the whole house.
As a pre-filter, we recommend our PX 50 pre-filter with sediment valve. If the mains pressure exceeds 8 bar, add a pressure-reducing valve with pre-filter IMT-M5 or the IMT-M8 with display at the inlet.
NOTICE: the filter is intended for cold water up to 45 °C only. Filtration efficiency depends on the pH and overall composition of the water, so with high iron and manganese levels we recommend a water analysis first. Replace the cartridge when pressure drops or its capacity is exhausted, usually after 3–6 months.
Replacement filter cartridge
When the cartridge reaches its capacity, order the iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide filter cartridge. You can replace it yourself without special tools: shut off the water supply, unscrew the housing with the supplied wrench, replace the cartridge and briefly flush the filter.

FAQ
Everything you need to know about the Big Blue 20" iron and manganese filter
How can I tell if my water contains iron or manganese?
Typical signs are rusty or black stains on sanitary ware, yellowish laundry, a metallic taste and turbidity that settles when the water stands. A water analysis gives certainty and shows the concentrations the filter has to handle.
Where is the iron filter installed?
On the main water supply to the building, ideally after a mechanical pre-filter. If you also have a softener, the iron filter goes before it. The filter must be indoors or in a frost-free room.
Does the filter also remove limescale?
No. The filter removes iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide, but leaves water hardness (calcium and magnesium). For limescale, use a water softener.
How often does the filter cartridge need replacing?
Cartridge life depends on the iron and manganese concentration and the volume of water used. On average, the cartridge is replaced after 3–6 months of operation, or when water pressure drops.
Can I replace the cartridge myself?
Yes. With the supplied wrench and a drain valve (if installed), replacement takes just a few minutes. Shut off the water supply, unscrew the housing and insert a new iron and manganese cartridge.
Can the filter reduce the water pressure in the shower?
Thanks to the large Big Blue 20" size and 1" connection, pressure loss with a clean cartridge is minimal and not noticeable in a normal household. A marked drop in pressure is a sign that it is time to replace the cartridge.
Does the filter need electricity or salt?
No. The filter works without electricity or salt regeneration. The only maintenance is regular cartridge replacement.
🔬 How it works: Dissolved iron and manganese are oxidised in the cartridge into insoluble particles, which the cartridge then traps mechanically. Read more about iron and manganese in well water on our blog.
